The Listeners

On her last full day, Polly found people in the forest. In a small clearing stood a quiet camp, and a scientist sat among a tangle of wires and microphones, with more microphones tied high in the surrounding trees. The scientist looked up, surprised and pleased to see a small bird in round glasses watching from a branch, and then went gently back to work. This was the one human Polly would meet all week.

They were listening to the forest. The rainforest is so thick and so tall that you cannot count its animals by looking, because most of them are hidden in the leaves or only come out at night. So instead the scientists listen. They leave microphones in the trees for weeks and record everything, and from the sounds alone they can tell which animals are there and how they are doing.

The scientist turned a screen toward Polly's branch. On it the forest's voice had become a picture, lines and waves of light, each shape a different call. A low rumble was one creature, a sharp ring was another, and a soft buzz was a third. A forest that seemed like noise was really a hundred animals all speaking at once, and patient ears had learned to tell them apart.

Polly stayed until the light grew long, listening with them. Then she lifted from the branch and rose back toward the canopy, leaving the small camp glowing below. Behind her the recorders kept turning in the trees, quietly gathering the voices of a forest that never truly fell silent, saving them for someone to read.
