On the seventh morning the sea spoke more softly. The waves at Praia do Norte were still large, but they came slower now, with white tops combed backwards by the wind, like a giant slowly letting out its breath. The silver storm light had thinned, and patches of pale gold moved across the water. The great far storm was over, and its last messengers were arriving tired. Gulls drifted above the headland in loose, easy circles, in no hurry to be anywhere at all.
