The Sea Grows Quiet

On the seventh morning the sea spoke more softly. The waves at Praia do Norte were still large, but they came slower now, with white tops combed backwards by the wind, like a giant slowly letting out its breath. The silver storm light had thinned, and patches of pale gold moved across the water. The great far storm was over, and its last messengers were arriving tired. Gulls drifted above the headland in loose, easy circles, in no hurry to be anywhere at all.

The old albatross landed on the fort wall with his spyglass and folded his wings with great ceremony. You stayed, little traveller, he said. Most visitors come for one photograph and are gone before the sea changes its mind. You watched the whole story, from the first flat morning to the last slow wave. You have seen the giants of Nazaré.

Polly took one last long look from the lantern. The sea was returning to its calm, polished blue, but now she could read it. Just off the beach, a darker ribbon of water hinted at the great canyon below, the hidden engine, resting now, waiting patiently for the next far storm. The sea keeps its biggest secret in plain sight.

Then Polly lifted off the warm red metal into the golden morning. She flew south along the coastline without hurrying. Behind her the old fort grew smaller and smaller, until the red lantern was only a bright, patient dot above the Atlantic.
