The Riders Arrive

On day five the riders arrived. Trucks came up the road. They carried jet skis and long, narrow surfboards. Dogs ran beside the trucks. Gulls called in the sky.

In the old fort there is a special room. Famous surfboards hang on the walls. Every board rode a giant wave here. Some are broken, but they hang there too.

In the afternoon, everyone looked at the sea. Seabirds sat in a row on the wall. The old albatross was there too. The sea rolled in slow, heavy lines. Tomorrow, the giants.

That night Polly stayed close to the warm lantern. The waves boomed in the dark. She slept only a little.
