The Listeners

On her last full day, Polly found people in the forest. In a small clearing was a quiet camp. A scientist sat among wires and microphones, with more microphones tied high in the trees. The scientist looked up, surprised and happy to see a small bird in round glasses on a branch, and then went back to work. This was the one human Polly would meet all week.

They were listening to the forest. The rainforest is so thick and tall that you cannot count the animals by looking. Most of them hide in the leaves or come out only at night. So the scientists listen instead. They leave microphones in the trees for weeks. From the sounds, they can tell which animals are there.

The scientist turned a screen toward Polly. On it, the forest's voice had become a picture, lines and waves of light. Each shape was a different call. A low rumble was one animal, a sharp ring was another. A forest that sounded like noise was really many animals speaking at once.

Polly stayed until the light grew long. Then she lifted off the branch and flew back toward the canopy. Behind her the recorders kept turning in the trees, quietly saving the voices of a forest that never truly fell silent.
