Seven Skirts and Silver Fish

On day three Polly went down to the town. She rode the funicular, a small train that goes up and down the cliff. Polly sat inside and watched the red roofs.

The beach was full of wooden racks. On the racks were many small silver fish. They were drying in the sun. This is an old tradition here.

Gull ladies turned the fish with care. Each lady wore seven skirts, one on top of another. Seven skirts, like the seven days of the week.

In the evening Polly went back to her red lantern. The waves were taller than yesterday. Now she could hear them too.
