The Canyon Under the Sea

The next morning the sea was so smooth it looked like poured glass. Polly left the lantern early and flew out low over Praia do Norte, so low that her wingtips almost brushed the cold water. Nothing about the quiet surface suggested giants. A few small fish flickered beneath her like loose silver coins.

Then the water changed. Near the sand it was a bright, sunny green, and Polly could see ripples of light playing on the seabed. A little farther out, with no warning at all, it turned a deep, serious blue, as if someone had drawn a line across the sea. Polly slowed her flight and circled back over the line. On one side, green. On the other, almost black.

The color marked a secret. Beneath her, hidden under the waves, the seabed splits open into the largest underwater canyon in Europe. It begins almost at the beach and runs far out into the Atlantic, sinking deeper and deeper, until the sea floor lies about five thousand meters below the surface. It is a canyon vast enough to swallow whole mountains, and most visitors standing on the shore never learn that it is there.

The canyon is the engine of the giants. When storm waves travel across the ocean, the deep water of the canyon lets them keep their power, then bends and squeezes them toward the beach, stacking wave upon wave. That evening, from the lantern, Polly watched the first thin lines of swell stripe the sea, faint and patient, like messengers sent ahead of an army.
