タクシーで街を横断するには、ホテルの部屋代よりも高くつく。駅員が彼の顔を見て、通りの先を指さした。そこには、コンビニとラーメン屋の間にカプセルホテルの看板が光っていた。トーマスは機械で支払いを済ませ、ロッカーの鍵を受け取り、他の電車を逃した人々と共に、シングルベッドほどの大きさの清潔なプラスチックのポッドで眠った。
朝、彼は自動販売機でコーヒーを買い、一番列車で帰宅した。少し誇らしげな気持ちで新鮮な朝を迎えた。今では、日本で夜に出かける前に必ず確認することがある。それはメニューでも地図でもなく、最終電車の時間だ。
