Keep it on your phone →二日目の朝、列車はすでにモスクワから東に四百キロ進んでいた。ポリーは小さな折りたたみテーブルの上で目を覚ました。窓からの光は、北の夏の朝の柔らかな灰色だった。年配の女性、ガリーナはすでに金属のホルダーに入ったグラスでお茶を飲んでいた。
「白樺ね」と彼女は言った。
ポリーは外を見た。白い幹の木々が時速六十キロで通り過ぎていく。どこを見ても白樺だ。林や空き地ではなく、風景全体が白樺だった。
ここはロシアの白樺地帯の西端だ。白樺は地球上で最も広い分布を持つ落葉樹だ。ほとんど何も育たない場所でも育つ。ここには火があった、あるいはここに森ができるだろう、でもまず私がいる、と言う木だ。
ノートパソコンを持った若い男性、名前はパヴェルだと分かったが、彼が顔を上げた。「あなたはオウムですね」と彼は平坦な英語で言った。「気づきましたよ」と言って、再びタイピングに戻った。
ガリーナは二杯目のお茶を注ぎ、ポリーに差し出した。それは琥珀色で、薄いレモンスライスが浮かんでいた。車両の端にあるサモワールは十二時間も動き続けていた。
ポリーは慎重にグラスの縁から一口飲んだ。それはとても熱くて、とても甘かった。
「この旅で一番長い部分は木々よ」とガリーナは言った。「これに乗るまで、人々はそれを理解しない。六日間列車に座って、外を見れば木々ばかり。終わりがないのよ。」
ヴォルガを過ぎるとタイガが始まる。ロシアの土地の約四十パーセントはタイガだ。この国には世界の立ち木の約二十パーセントが含まれている。
ポリーは二口目を飲んだ。パヴェルはタイピングを続けた。ガリーナは本に戻った。外では、四百キロがまるで一続きの白樺のように過ぎ去っていった。
