Keep it on your phone →3日目の朝、列車はエカテリンブルクに停車した。ガリーナは夜のうちにすでに降りていた。パヴェルはまだ眠っていた。空いた寝台には新しい乗客が2人いた。1人はおそらく20歳くらいの兵士で、まだ一度も着ていないようなきれいな制服を着ていた。もう1人は灰色がかった黄色の髪をした年配の男性で、釣り道具の箱を持っていた。
ポリーは窓の方に跳ねて行った。
エカテリンブルクはウラル山脈で最大の都市だ。ウラル山脈はヨーロッパとアジアを分ける。高さはそれほどないが、長く続く尾根のようだ。しかし、古い山脈だ。5億年前、ウラルはすでに大きな山脈だった。それが何億年もかけて削られ、今でも残っている。地球上で最も古い山脈の一つだ。
シベリア鉄道はエカテリンブルクを通ってウラル山脈を越える。線路の1,777キロ地点には小さな標識があり、片側には「ヨーロッパ」、もう片側には「アジア」と書かれている。車掌はポリーに微笑みながら言った。「その標識は観光用のものだ。本当の境界は地理的にははっきりした場所ではない。ウラル川の分水嶺に沿って大まかに走っている。」
しかし、象徴的な越境が重要なのだ。
釣り道具の箱を持った新しい乗客が箱を開け、テーブルにルアーを並べた。色ごとに整理していた。
「どこで釣りをするの?」ポリーが尋ねた。
彼は顔を上げた。「バイカル湖だ。3日後にね。オムール、バイカルのサーモンだ。世界のどこにもない魚だよ。」彼は緑と銀色のスプーンを指差した。「これを使うんだ。」
数時間後、ペルヴォウラルスクの近くで、列車は小さな白いオベリスクのある空き地をゆっくりと通過した。「ヨーロッパ」と「アジア」がそれぞれの側に書かれていた。3人の観光客が列車に手を振っていた。パヴェルはノートパソコンから片手を上げて振り返した。
オベリスクは遠ざかっていった。列車は大陸を越えた。まるで小さな通りを渡るように。
