Polly inclinò la testa verso di essa. La gru inclinò la testa a sua volta. Polly si avvicinò. La gru non si mosse.
Un capotreno fischiò. Polly saltò di nuovo sul treno. Si girò e guardò la gru. La gru la stava ancora guardando. Poi sollevò lentamente il lungo collo e si allontanò, con passi deliberati, nella palude.
Il treno partì da Khabarovsk e girò verso sud. Il Pacifico era ora a meno di settecento chilometri di distanza.
